Public Defenders and Pro Bono: Inside the PDO–Pro Bono SG Partnership Model
This session offers an inside look at the partnership between Singapore’s Public Defender’s Office and Pro Bono SG, showing how civil society can support access to justice for those who cannot afford a legal service provider and who aren’t eligible for government legal aid. Participants will explore how such partnerships work in practice, including case referrals, volunteer recruitment and training, quality assurance, and maintaining independence while collaborating with government.
Through practical examples and candid discussion, attendees will consider how elements of the Singapore model could be adapted in their own jurisdictions, gaining insight into how pro bono organisations can strengthen criminal defence systems and expand access to justice.
