Legal Empowerment and Pro Bono Synergy: Overcoming and Closing Access to Justice Gaps for Grassroots and Marginalized Communities

Date: 1 December 2023

Time:  15.30 – 17.00

Session Description:

The session is aimed at sharing the finding of the IDRC cohorts research on legal empowerment approaches that help overcome access to justice barriers in Southeast Asia. The researches are designed to dig deeper into strategies to improve programming of civil society organizations doing LE work and Pro Bono practitioners across the region. The APBC participants will greatly benefit from the sharing since the research features how different legal empowerment approaches close the gap on access to justice by the vulnerable and marginalized sectors. Pro bono lawyers and Policymakers will also learn from the recommendations produced by the research which will redound to the communities gain through improved practice and greater participation.

The session will also feature stories of LE practices that will synthesize and institutionalize ‘what works’ and use that to shape future programming. It will also highlight strategies that have been used, how that has varied across different sectors/justice areas, and what the impact has been for communities.
