Registration and Suggested Donations

Since its start, the APBC has been run on a revenue-neutral basis, meaning money generated from the Conference is used to support the Conference and much of the surplus is used to subsidize the attendance of regional “Pro Bono Champions” who could not otherwise afford to attend. Most of the persons working to organize this convening do so in a pro bono capacity, and the Consortium works very hard to, at a minimum, cover the out of pocket expenses for persons attending. When the APBC has been a physical in-person event, most persons coming worked to source their own support to attend, which has made this event “belong to all” and “supported by all”.

In the past, the starting point has been that all Conference participants must pay a registration fee. This applies equally to everyone including the volunteer organizers and presenters. This is because the registration fees assist in paying for the costs of running the Conference, and there are out of pocket costs for all participants who attend the Conference. It is essential that these out of pocket costs are covered in order to ensure the sustainability of the APBC.

While there still are a number of essential out of pocket costs associated with holding the APBVC, the Consortium recognizes that this inaugural virtual conference, and this year, some things are different. Strongly taking into account the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the financial impact, the Consortium wants to ensure that the reach of this vital convening is not hampered due to one’s inability to pay. For this reason, this year’s virtual conference will not require a mandatory registration fee. Instead, there will be a suggested sliding scale donation request.

For those that can pay the full suggested donation fee, including some participants from the private sector, we really encourage and urge you to do so. For others, unable to pay the full suggested donation fee, we still urge you to consider paying something, including even a small amount as this event continues to belong to all of us and continues to be supported by all of us.

Donations made will be applied toward both the APBVC out of pocket costs and to support justice issues magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic.
