Thursday Evening Networking

Join fellow pro bono enthusiasts at one of many networking events taking place – pick your topic of interest, be inspired and mingle. We suggest squeezing in with the locals to take a tram (or ‘ding ding’) from outside Fortress Hill MTR station near the conference venue to the networking event of your choice (note you’ll need HK$2.60 in coins for the fare).

1.         The Difference Pro Bono Can Make: A Look at Immigration Detention and International Legal Professionalism

Organised by The Global Pro Bono Bar Association and UNHCR and kindly hosted by Morrison & Foerster.

This event will explore the role of legal professionals in critical cross-border pro bono contexts, drawing upon the experience of UNHCR with the immigration detention of children in various jurisdictions around the world as well as The Global Pro Bono Bar Association’s collaborative approach to meeting current needs in cross-border pro bono legal support. Current collaborative pro bono opportunities available through The Global Pro Bono Bar will also be presented for those interested in getting involved. Drinks and canapes will be provided.

2.         How lawyers can provide LGBT+ focused advocacy and support

Co-organised by HK GALA and DLA Piper and kindly hosted by DLA Piper.

This event aims to highlight the LGBT+ focused advocacy and support that lawyers can provide and have provided in the Asia region. Speakers from HK GALA and DLA Piper will talk about some recent legal victories for LGBT+ rights and how interested lawyers can provide their own advocacy and support, regardless of location, firm size, or local environment. Drinks and canapes will be provided.

3.         Drugs, crime and punishment: women and the need for access to justice

Organised by the International Drug Policy Consortium and kindly hosted by Linklaters.

Women are being imprisoned at a rate that is higher than for men, mostly for drug offences in many countries in Asia. This event explores further the driving factors, and the potential role of lawyers in ensuring improved justice outcomes for women. Drinks and canapes will be provided.

4.         Pro Bono: The Next Generation

Organised by Law Society Pro Bono Services and kindly hosted by Shearman & Sterling.

Be inspired, encouraged and energised at our young pro bono advocates roundtable!  Join next generation pro bono lawyers, NGO staff and law students as they share candidly on their experiences, dreams and aspirations for the future of pro bono in Asia and beyond! 5.         How men and lawyers can support the women’s movement

Organised by PILnet, HER Fund and Stephenson Harwood and kindly hosted by Stephenson Harwood.

This event is a networking opportunity to meet different women’s groups and lawyers who support the women’s movement.  The event will start off with a panel discussion about how men and lawyers can support the women’s movement.  The panelists, who are all active in their own right with different groups that work on women’s issues, will share with the audience how they got involved and will also share details of the work that they do.  The lawyers will share why they think pro bono support is important in the women’s movement and the men on the panel will talk about their experiences as male supporters of the women’s movement. Drinks and snacks will be provided.

Friday Jumbo Celebration Dinner

Join us for a jumbo celebration of pro bono in Asia and enjoy a delicious Chinese banquet in an iconic Hong Kong setting. Note there will be a very short and accessible boat ride from the land to the floating restaurant.

Time: 6.30pm registration, dinner from 7pm to 10pm

Location: Jumbo Kingdom Restaurant, Shum Wan Pier Drive, Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen

Transportation: Buses will take delegates from the conference venue to Jumbo Kingdom – meet in the Harbour Grand Hotel lobby at 5.30pm. Buses will also bring delegates back to two drop off points – Harbour Grand Hotel and Central MTR station. Alternatively take the MTR to and from Wong Chuk Hang Station (Exit B). We don’t recommend taxis at this time on Friday night.

Saturday Afternoon Closing Drinks

Enjoy two hours of unlimited canapés and drinks in one of the most tranquil locations in the centre of Hong Kong, kindly hosted by Davis Polk and Asia Society Hong Kong. Celebrate the conference and watch the handing over of the Viva Pro Bono Flag. Bring on 2019!

Daniel Tang

A self-taught illustrator, Daniel has had keen interest in anything creative since he was able to hold a pencil. When the opportunity came up for him to contribute and apply his talents for the 2018 Asia Pro Bono Conference, he jumped at the chance to share and give back to the community, hoping to help those in need of access to justice.
