The SDG Legal Initiative: Onboarding the Legal Sector to Further the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The Sustainable Development Goals, as identified in 2015 by the United Nations, aim to make the world a more equitable place by 2030. This ambitious agenda includes interlinked goals such as just societies, mitigating climate change, ending poverty and hunger, and ensuring good health and well-being as well as quality education for all.  Most of these aspirations are linked directly or indirectly to the law and the work of lawyers.

With less than 10 years until the 2030 deadline, A4ID is leading the SDG Legal Initiative, which aims to reach every legal professional in the world and provide them with the knowledge and opportunities to take practical action to contribute to the achievement of the SDG agenda. The keystone of the Initiative is A4ID’s Legal Guide to the SDGs, whose chapter on SDG 16 will be launched during the session.

Being major players in brokering deals, drafting agreements, carrying out due diligence, and advising on the law, lawyers unequivocally have an important role and a huge influence in the implementation of the SDGs.

In the aftermath of the pandemic, the session will discuss the new challenges that have emerged in the Asian region and how the legal profession can use the responses to these challenges as foundation stones for furthering the SDGs. The session will also introduces the participants to the SDG Legal Initiative and how it can be a useful tool for lawyers to play their part in this Agenda.
